The reason I get my shit together before tornado season

by Techievampire on Apr.08, 2006, under Everyday

I can’t remember what year it was but I do remember that my Grandfather was in the hospital after having been run over by a hit and run driver as he crossed a street. Nasty weather night. They moved the patients at St. Francis into the tunnels under the hospital when it got really bad. I can remember looking out the window and watching my Grandmother walk to the back door with an old oil lamp in her hand in case the electricity went out. My Mother sent my Father over to get her when she knew the weather was going to hell.

Now you have to know this. My Mother had had a really bad experience when she was young. But she didn’t prepare much in advance for what would happen if we had to hunker down. The sirens went off that night and she ran into my Brother’s bedroom and threw open his closet. I swear to God I’ve never seen someone move so fast in my life. His closet as usual was full of shit he’d hidden in there to keep from cleaning his room. lol The woman windmilled her arms as she’d grab something in each hand and throw it behind her. My Grandmother, my Brother, and I stood there with our mouths hanging open watching. Then she raced over and grabbed my Brother and I and threw US into the closet. Everything worked out okay for our family but it was a mess elsewhere in Tulsa.

Then there was the time I was babysitting for my Brother. You could tell something nasty was going on that day with the weather because it was ungodly hot and humid. Then the weather went to hell. I grabbed the kid in his carrier, threw one of the cats in a carrier, and tossed the other two severely pissed cats into the hall closet. I then parked my ass in the hall and listened to the radio and kept the baby occupied playing with him. The winds were awful. That’s what it was they said. Straight winds. I swear to god I could hear the shingles on the roof lifting up and slapping back down and the house shuddered. I decided to shove the cat that was in the carrier into the hall closet. Bad mistake. Ollie clawed and scratched and then he pissed on me before I got him in the closet. I handled that then Randall needed to have his diaper changed. The noise was getting worse and worse and my nerves were shot to hell.

While I had his diaper off the little sucker let fly.

The kid pissed on me too.

I lost it at that point and boo-hoo’d. Yowling cats, howling winds, me crying and then I hear this little giggle. I looked over at Randall and he’s giggling and grinning from ear to ear. Ahhh gotta love babies. He was enjoying the hell out of all of it. I took him out of his carrier cleaned him up and proceeded to tickle him until he could barely breathe from laughing. lol

If you add in all the times I sat in a travel trailer during storms while camping.. and my last experience with a tornado. *shudder* Not even going to discuss that one. GOD. Due to that experience.. I try and get ready before all hell breaks loose.

It also explains why my favorite thing in the apartment is my SAME weather alert monitor. :D
